A Nonsworn Community College Public Safety Department’s Lessons from 2020’s Minneapolis Civil Unrest

Mark DeRee provides the lessons learned by the Minneapolis Community and Technical College campus officers following the City of Minneapolis and Saint Paul civil unrest, looting and riots in reaction to the death of George Floyd.

A Nonsworn Community College Public Safety Department’s Lessons from 2020’s Minneapolis Civil Unrest

In June, the City of Minneapolis and Saint Paul saw significant civil unrest, looting and riots in reaction to the death of George Floyd. Again, on August 26, a second round of civil unrest and looting occurred after a homicide suspect took his own life along a major downtown corridor.

During this presentation, Mark DeRee will take a look back and provide lessons learned from these events. The presentation will include the Minneapolis Community and Technical College campus response from both incidents, including what they knew, the actions they took,  limitations, concerns and the after-effects.
